Gainification …

Gainification …. Karl Polanyi stated on page 30 in his book on the great transformation:
‘Nineteenth century civilization alone was economic in a different and distinctive sense, for it chose to base itself on a motive only rarely acknowledged as valid in the history of human societies, and certainly never before raised to the level of a justification of action and behavior in everyday life, namely, gain. The self-regulating market system was uniquely derived from this principle.’
But should not computer spell checks acknowledge this historical fact – or to be more concise: Should not English language be sufficiently wise to accept the term of
Gainification
?
Sure, there is the warning – but should we allow Shakespeare’s Timon allow to prevail?

Who seeks for better of thee, sauce his palate
With thy most operant poison! What is here?
Gold? yellow, glittering, precious gold? No, gods,
I am no idle votarist: roots, you clear heavens!
Thus much of this will make black white, foul fair, Wrong right, base noble, old young, coward valiant. Ha, you gods! why this? what this, you gods? Why, this Will lug your priests and servants from your sides, Pluck stout men’s pillows from below their heads:
This yellow slave
Will knit and break religions, bless the accursed, Make the hoar leprosy adored, place thieves
And give them title, knee and approbation
With senators on the bench: this is it
That makes the wappen’d widow wed again;
She, whom the spital-house and ulcerous sores Would cast the gorge at, this embalms and spices
To the April day again. Come, damned earth,
Thou common whore of mankind, that put’st odds Among the route of nations, I will make thee
Do thy right nature.

Are such statements sufficient reason for standing in the way of innovating language, innovated and then allowing  us to find the right name for the wrong thing?

manufacture adé …?

Language – keep it alive … a matter not only of talking as otherwise they will be forgotten as much as the dead are forgotten and the forgotten are dying …, starving to death one may say. And keeping it alive means, allowing the privilege of permanent ‘rebirth’ –  REnewing and reNEWing, the offspring never being ‘just the same’ as the parents ….. the genitori as we say in Italian – some form of generating I suppose.

I often just do it, invent, use ‘new words’ … and may forget them, or not.

Here is now a suggested language innovation I have been thinking about for some days, ventilating the pros and cons and meaning and possible misunderstandings of

the brainifacturer

though not only misunderstandings but also better-unferstandings: the brainworker as somebody who works by immediately transforming brain-activity into what we usually call product.

This issue was discussed – in different ways – for a long time, as for instance by suggesting science becoming immediate productive force. And it was questioned too, as such ‘ideas based products’ are hardly products as long as they are not materialised into something, taking the form of something tangible.

Innovation of language? Or is it more about innovation of thinking and social science: Re-thinking products, values, valuation … production … – what if is about and can be about.

the combi-app

Recently I had to travel from Berlin to Salzburg – and after not living in Europe for some time now, I booked a flight, not really thinking about the distance, simply having the “vague feeling” that it is quite a distance and visiting a gateway site, scanning hundreds of connections.

After booking the flight – Berlin to Cologne/Duesseldorf, waiting for hours and connecting to Salzburg – I talked to a colleague, en passant mentioning the journey. He mentioned that the train journey is very convenient, which meant not least: very fast and direct …. — ooooooh what did I do? why did I torture myself this way? Actually I like travelling by train – and I frequently faced the problem that booking online, using for instance one of those “gateway sites” – scanning hundreds of connections – or when using a travel agency the options are limited, for instance combining flight- and rail-options (later I thought even flying from Berlin -Munich and going by train would habe been more convenient), not making non-locals aware of traveling by train being a feasible alternative etc. – there is also the point that we frequently hear others talking about “this one option”, then not considering that there may be other ways … .

  • Perhaps a challenge for somebody who wants t0 develop a new APPS?
  • Perhaps something for politicians that can push services to collaborate – in several cases even the cooperation between cross-border railway services is limited, data on prices, booking options are not available online …
  • Perhaps something for politicians pushing “price setters” towards environmentally responsible anti-dumping considerations (n other words: not allowing airlines to undercut priced for train-journeys …
  • Perhaps something we all can take on board, thinking not only on the big-data-solution offered on the web, but being more conscious and referring to the big-eceprience-option offered by out brain …

Much to do …, we all are challenged …
