While money remains a tool, making exchange possible and easier, it is also gaining independence, the ultimate transformation is the fetishisation: money is valued for the sake of itself, without having a genuine own, inherent money. A great many coins would have to be melted down to forge a frying pan from the metal; a great many banknotes would be needed to jot down notes — even for a short story — on the blank margins.
